11:11 KÖLN

27th February - 5th March 2025
6 days & 6 nights

"This 6-day photography trip is an ode to German traditions, photography history and design like you have not read in any book." - Lucia Marcano

  • In Köln, the carnival festivities begin on the 11th of November at 11:11 in the morning. It is St. Martin’s day and costumed people storm the city and symbolically take power for the coming weeks. Imagine waking up to go to work on a Thursday and not being able to cross your street, as it is collapsed with people celebrating. You may be able to get to your office, but at 11:11 every activity will stop, beers will be opened and the craze will begin: locals will be happy, celebrating, singing non-stop.

In Köln we have winter, spring, summer, fall and what they call “the fifth season” and 11:11 is when it all begins. They spend 365 days preparing for the main week in Feb. the costumes, the performances, the songs, these are their traditions and they are proud of them, I want you to be part of it from a documentary point of view.

  • The trip will revolve around these three pillars:

    • The folklore of the Carnival

    • Practical exploration of the history of photography

    • The design and quality of Leica's "made in Germany"

    • High end Leica cameras available to use during the trip

    • Group meetings in my home: including breakfast and daily prep and evening review of your daily work

    • Wet plate collodion workshop

    • Exclusive 11 people group experience

    • Camera-in-hand trip. The photo opportunity is where you least expect it

Welcoming you to Köln makes this trip particularly personal, it’s not just a trip to get to know a city with someone who lives there. It’s about opening my home’s door to you and turning it into our private classroom, one where we will talk and share photography from many different points of view, on my sofas and with all of my books and references to work with. It is everything I miss when teaching online.

What’s includeD?

leica “DAS WESENTLICHE”

“Is the core of an object, a feeling, a situation. Its very essence, reduced to its purest form – the “soul”. Applied to design language, das Wesentliche means to eliminate all distractions and to concentrate on the essentials”.

The above is Leica’s brand claim, and it really resonates with how I understand photography.

Thanks to our collaboration with Leica, we will have the privilege of using their exquisite high-end cameras during this trip. As a participant, you'll have the opportunity to experiment with and master these beauties with the support of your guides/teachers.

Creative Workshops

Participate in workshops designed to spark creativity and expand your photographic techniques like a wetplate collodion workshop or a masterclass in documentary photography at Wetzlar.
